Set within Botswana’s private 1,350 km² Selinda Reserve, the intimate Zarafa Camp (formerly called Zibadianja) was completely relocated and rebuilt in 2008. It now occupies a scenic setting atop an ancient, slightly-raised earth bank, beside the lagoons and floodplains which stem from the Zibadianja Lagoon. It is one of Botswana's most exclusive and most costly camps.
Zarafa stands in a line of lush, riverine vegetation which runs roughly north-west/south-east. In front of the camp, to the north and west, are the reedbeds and waterways beside the permanent Zibalianja Lagoon – and beyond them these tracts of savannah areas where most activities are conducted. This is an attractive, open environment where wildlife can easily be spotted at a distance. Behind the camp, to the south and east, is a fairly solid belt of mopane woodlands – where the wildlife is usually of much less interest during the dry season.
Rooms
Just four magnificent tented villas and a spectacular main area, all raised on decking to take advantage of views over the lagoon, reflect the desire for exclusivity and privacy which inspired Zarafa’s design. Each tent is positioned on the forest's edge, rimming the shores of the floodplains and far from a neighbour. Each of the three "rooms" of the tent is decorated with custom-made furniture, handcrafted from recycled ancient hardwoods. Upon entry is a large lounge appointed with a leather sofa, armchairs, personal bar and writing desk. Adjoining the lounge is the main bedroom and dressing area. Exiting the bedroom, a beautiful copper gas fireplace is strategically placed between the bathroom and the bedroom to allay the chill of the winter months. The main bathroom is comprised of a copper bath and shower, double sinks and private toilet. Off the bathroom, the raised walkway leads to the outdoor shower, complete with wrap around showerheads! The private verandah, running the length of the front of the tent, offers a private plunge pool, outdoor lounge and sweeping view of Zibadianja Lagoon's waters.
Zarafa Dhow Suites
Zarafa Dhow Suites is the brand new "villa unit" added to Zarafa Camp in May 2014. Gorgeous views, sleeping maximum 5 guests with daily rate including the services of private butler, chef, guide and vehicle.
Tents
Each tent is positioned on the forest's edge, rimming the shores of the floodplains and far from a neighbour.
Dining
Meals are generally table d’hôte and include a light breakfast at dawn, a hearty brunch on return from the morning activity, afternoon tea and snacks before the afternoon activity, rounded off with a sumptuous dinner in the evening. Special meals and requirements can be catered for on request. All local soft drinks, wines, spirits and beers are included in the tariff.
Recreation
A small boutique shop stocks locally made goods and quality African artifacts. There is a small ‘jungle’ gym with rowing machine, treadmill, free weights and yoga equipment. In-room massage is available (at additional cost). Each tent comes with its own Canon professional camera including a Canon 5D body and 35-135 mm and 100-400mm zoom lenses for use during a stay. Photos are then burned to a DVD as a souvenir at the end of your stay. With a maximum of just eight guests, Zarafa Camp offers complete flexibility. Drives do focus on the most comfortable and productive times of day, early morning and late afternoon, but full day drives are also quite common at a guest’s request.
